Need a small project to work on with Sagelight

Need a small project to work on with Sagelight
Now that I am back on Sagelight, I need something small to work on. I can't really work on Sagelight full time until the free version gets out there more.

It would be great to hear what you would like to see in Sagelight sooner than later. See some examples below.

But, I can work on smaller things -- discrete elements vs. larger functional things Sagelight has needed for a while and that are fairly easy to implement.

This will let me get back into development mode with Sagelight without taking on a piece that will take 1-2 months to implement.

Also, it's really interesting how my programming style has evolved over the last few years, and I want to start the process if implementing a lot of core Sagelight areas with C++ 14/17, etc. For those who are familiar with C++, moving into the new additions to the C++ language has made life a lot easier in many ways in terms of writing a large piece of software like Sagelight as one person.

Some examples include (things that have come up recently):
  • PNG Support
  • Revamp the Cropping functionality (make it more useable)
  • Visual History Window (i.e. a more visual display of the history list as a floating, clickable window)

There are no doubt many smaller things I could implement -- like getting in the latest RAW profiles.

I also want to look at reformatting how Sagelight is approached. I will put this is another subject, but clearing up the Apply button, layers vs. filters, etc. would probably make Sagelight make more sense, as well.

Let me know some thoughts. It would be great to get some updates out there, and it has taken me far too long to realize that sometimes the smaller things can be pretty big things, too.

Rob

RE: Need a small project to work on with Sagelight
Making "Kayak" mode as accessible as it used to be would be my suggestion. As I like to tweak the white level and gamma as one of the final steps, and I can no longer do that if I go into Quick Edit mode along the way.

Also allowing gamma values of 0.97, 0.98, and 0.99 would be nice. :-) (as now it jumps straight from 0.96 to 1.00).

RE: Need a small project to work on with Sagelight
I am glad to see that Sagelight is back. I really like using the editor and it has been my goto editor for the last few years.

I have mailed the following suggestion, but maybe this is a good place to have them here as a discussion. Though I have used Sagelight for some time now, I have not exhaustively used all its options. So chances are that some of the suggestions may already be implemented, I'm just not aware of them yet.

There seems to be memory leak (unless it is only happening on the two systems (Win-7 and Win-10) that I am using Sagelight on). Each time I open up the 'Power Box Control' Sagelight grabs more memory and does not release it (Task-Manager shows this). I have a suspicion that there are other cases where this happens, but this is the most obvious - eventually the program stops responding and crashes.

I think it would be nice is to have more consistency between some of the controls, like Vignette-blur shape selection (Filters & effects) is quite different to Vignette/gradient shape selection.

Keep previously selected option for modules (as is the case with 'Noise-reduction control'), so when modules are reopened one does not have to re-select preferences, like
- Auto-crop in 'Rotate Image' (also adding new option to keep aspect ratio)
- Aspect-ratio and precut-size in 'Crop-image'
- and others
(may even use them as default start-up settings)

Provide a 'heal' option under 'Clone brush' for smoother and better blinding at edges and colour/brightness matching in the middle.

Use of the mouse wheel to zoom-in/out or to increase default options like resizing the brush while the cursor is over the image

Use right mouse button to move window when zoomed in

These are just a few things that would be nice to have.

I look forward to version 5 - and I wish you, Rob, all the best.

PS. just a couple of other things.
- I had not realised that the pro-options are no longer available. I do use them (mainly to adjust blacks and whites) and would like to see them back.
- I followed the 'Thomas Kinkade-style Paintings' tutorial the other day and when I wanted to try it out, I noticed that the 'Blend Undo Image' is no longer under the edit menu. Has that shifted to somewhere else or is it gone?

RE: Need a small project to work on with Sagelight
Yeah, it would be nice if we could set our own default settings. For example, I almost always go into "HDR Details" with each image, and it'd be nice to have that open with default settings that I picked. Not the settings that I last left off with in the previous image, but settings that I consciously picked to be the default settings.

And yes, there probably are memory leaks, as I find Sagelight is more likely to crash after I've used it for several images in a row. I've pretty much made it my regular routine to close Sagelight when done with one image, and re-open it when starting with a new image (although I'm sure that's probably not necessary, but it has become my defensive habit).

RE: Need a small project to work on with Sagelight
Oh! Another suggestion for a small project... currently you have an option in Sagelight to put a white border around an image. I think it would be nice to be able to make the entire background surrounding an image to be white (instead of black). The reason I say this is that sometimes I'm optimizing an image intended to go to a website that has a white background. Or even something like Facebook, that has a white background. And I find that if I'm optimizing it within Sagelight with its black background, that when I later put it in its final destination with a white background, that it turns out looking too dark.

So having an adjustable background color I think would address this. I'd probably be happy with just a choice of black or white, but maybe if you want to get fancy about it, one could choose any background color.
